YOGA RETREAT (WORKSHOP) in Crete/Greece | August 15.-22.

Download the full description in EN and DE.

We are pleased to announce this year again an exceptional Workshop/Retreat on the sunny island of Crete, one of the most impressive Greek islands. The practice is important part of the philosophy and tradition of Ashtanga Yoga. Here beginners and advanced students will have the ability to both start and develop their own practices.

The Yoga room and terrace have direct views out onto the white beaches of the Bay of Triopetra. Triopetra (“triple rock”) is located off the beaten path in the south of the island of Crete.

This location is considered to have the best insider’s tip because in the 1960’s “flower children” from around the world chose Crete for their place of meeting. The untouched nature invites you to explore or simply to admire the beauty. To further promote a peaceful environment there are no bars or loud nightlife in the immediate vicinity. Here we have found the perfect location for learning and deepening our practices of Ashtanga Yoga..

in tradition

Ashtanga Yoga Vienna (AYV) teaching is in the traditional Yoga linage of T.Krishnamacharya, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Manju Patthabi Jois .

The AYV Yoga School  was founded by authorised senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Natasa Cvetkovic ( with the great support of Manju Patthabi Jois ( Ashtanga Yoga Vienna Yoga School is open to anyone intersted in Yoga.

In Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga System  you hold (stay in) every asana= posture until you finished 5 consecutive breaths (or more), the various body postures are connected by the harmonization of movement, breathing and focus. One moves through a sequence of postures and support the movement with the breath (one to the other asana – picture) while  staying focused (=drishti “line of vision” or “focusing”) – it takes long practice to establish the specific breathing techniques ujjay pranayam at the same time. The pictures of yoga poses should be understood as providing guidance not as a depiction of your own asana (yoga posture). Ashtanga Yoga should be learned in years of practice with guidence of the teacher.

Yoga in the tradition of Sri K.Pattabhi Jois

Mysore Yoga teaching Method and developing of the own yoga practice

Teaching methods

Ashtanga Yoga teaching is based on a rich tradition which has been handed down from generation to generation  orally and fixed in written text. Nowadays  there are in principle two Ashtanga Yoga Teaching Methods: Ashtanga yoga guided and Mysore Style.

Ashtanga Mysore

Practice is performed autonomously- i.e. the postures, the rythm of breath the beginning and duration are all determined by the practioner. The teacher supports the practioner by providing corrections adjustments and practical hints.  Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore Style (idependent practice) is the focus of our offering.

Asthanga guided

In traditional Ashtanga Yoga led classes  the teacher is explicitly determining the postures and the rythm of breath to excercise controlling one’s breath and endurance – the count and the posture names are in sanskrit..  Asthange Yoga Beginner Courses are guided classes with more space for the repetition of the basics. Beginners and practioners who want to refresh their skills are recommended to start with attending the beginner guided classes or book privarte lessons.

New to Yoga? - Ashtanga Yoga Beginners
start your paractice

Yoga Beginners can get their yoga practice started right away in yoga lessons taught in one of these styles. The Yoga Beginner classes and courses focus on the anatomically correct performance of the asanas (=postures) , later the harmonious connection of  deep and constant breathing and movement while staying focused is emphasized and practiced.

At the beginning one should be focused on practice since the texts originate in those very practices which should generally be performed with utmost attentiveness.

The primary aim of the beginner is to get ready to start with his autonomous pracitice i.e. Mysore Style as soon as possible which is the very foundament for a sustained and secure practice of yoga.

It is  recommended to attend workshops private lessons and intensive training weeks at the very beginning.

The net is of course a source of endless information about yoga.

Often the question then is not: “Where do I find it?” but “Where should I start?”. With regular practice of course!

Ashtanga Yoga Beginner Courses (guided)

These courses are open any time to start with. Practioners of all skill levels are welcome

The ashtanga yoga beginner courses pass on the basic skills of the ashtanga yoga method. You will learn the fundamental breathing techniques and the interplay of breathing and movement is excercised and practiced in detail. One gets prepared for the autonomous practice (mysore style). The specific contents are determined by the participants:

Ashtanga method:

  • ujjayi breathing
  • bandhas
  • mantra
  • drishti
  • vinyasa and tristhana

The first series of ashtanga yoga:

  • sunsalutation A and B
  • Sequence of the asanas (ashtanga viyasa yoga first series):
standing , sitting and closing postures

important details concerning the positions and person relative variations are taken into account (especially concerning injuries or pregnancy) yoga breathing (breathing excercises = pranayama)

Additionally krama yoga (yoga therapy ) excercises ( which are based on the individual needs of the participants) are practiced in these classes. This way the advanced pracitioner is guided no less than the beginner.

Notice – Yoga Beginner courses

The yoga beginner courses take about 80 minutes and provide beginners and re-entries (e.g. after a sport injury and the like) with a very soft slow and informed introduction into ashtanga yoga. The classes are modular i.e. advanced classes presuppose the skills and knowledge gained in the beginners courses. Additional private lessons are recommended and can be purchased in classes at a discount price.

Mysore Style Yoga Beginner Classes

Beginners are very welcome. They start with a smaller set of yoga excercises (duration 20-40 minutes) further excercises are then added successively. Previous registration is necessery.

The primary aim of the beginner is to get ready to start with his autonomous practice i.e. Mysore style as soon as possible which is the very foundament for a sustained and secure practice of yoga. The Beginner Courses include selfdetermined practice excercises (Mysore Style).

Traditionally Led Ashtanga Classes (guided)

This in breath and movement in Sanskrit counted Yoga class can be challenging for own ambition. So you should take your time. At the very beginning fresh practitioners shouldn’t try to work through the whole program of the class (the whole asana sequence at once). Generally beginners are adviced to attend the guided Ashtanga Beginner course.
